Comprehensive Eye Examinations

When we do eye exams, we refuse to cut corners. We always schedule ample time so you will never feel rushed. We provide complete eye care for both adults and children. Our comprehensive eye examinations check your eyes inside and out for glaucoma, cataracts and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases. Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and we pride ourselves on the accuracy of our eyeglass prescriptions. In spite of our track record for highly accurate prescriptions, there are eyes that can be unstable for reasons ranging from medications to illness. In these rare cases, we will gladly re-examine the patient and remake the glasses.

Technology is rapidly changing the eye care industry. We utilize the latest in diagnostic equipment including the Epic 2000 computerized refraction system, digital retinal photography, and the Ocutouch System. And we are committed to keeping up with whatever advances will come next.

Contact Lenses

Our Eyewear Center offers a unique collection of designer and fashion frames and accessories in the latest styles. We provide you with the highest quality and most up-to-date lens designs, materials, and eyewear options available. We stock a large inventory of contact lenses for same day service, and offer the latest in fitting techniques and contact lens designs for all vision problems.

Dr. Backus and his staff are highly skilled and experienced in the design and fitting of contact lenses. We can supply any and all brands and types of contact lenses for all types of vision problems. We specialize in the hard-to-fit patient and those who have been unsuccessful contact wearers in the past.

Due to our fitting expertise and success, we are usually the first in the area to obtain new designs and contact lens materials from the contact lens manufacturers. This gives us the advantage of being able to fit our patients with the latest innovations in the contact lens field.

We carry a large inventory of contact lenses in our office, which allows us to dispense most contacts on the day of fitting and immediate replacement of lost lenses. We offer free trial fitting with most of the lens designs to allow you to experience contact lenses first hand before purchasing.

Optical Dispensing

Laser Vision Correction

For over 25 years doctors placed incisions in the cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In the early 1980’s, they began looking at lasers to improve the precision and predictability of altering the shape of the cornea. Researchers found that the Excimer laser could remove tissue with up to 0.25 microns of accuracy. Now, in its second decade of use, the technologically advanced Excimer laser has added a tremendous amount of precision, control and safety to the surgical correction of vision errors. Using this remarkable technology, the cornea is reshaped to correct your myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, thereby reducing or even eliminating a lifetime of dependence on corrective lenses for hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

Dr. Backus is certified in the pre- and post-operative care of refractive surgery patients. He can assist you in selecting the proper procedure for your particular vision problem, answer any questions you might have concerning these refractive surgeries, and help you in selecting an experienced and skilled surgeon to perform your surgery.

Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes

Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries. Please call our office at 309-663-0303 during office hours or after hours or on weekends. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.

Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.

Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Vision-Related Learning Problems

Our "Vision Improvement Program" can diagnose and successfully treat vision-related learning problems.

Attention problems, slow reading, poor comprehension, letter reversals are but a few of the symptoms displayed by children with learning disabilities. Others include losing place while reading, working slowly, poor eye-hand coordination, and poor memory.

We offer a FREE evaluation for children between the ages of 6 and 15. This free screening includes a series of 18 tests measuring concentration, visual memory, letter reversals, eye-hand coordination, visual teaming, focusing, and sensory integration.

If a problem is found, we offer a therapy program that attacts the cause of these problems and drastically improves a child's ability to learn.

InfantSEE

Dr. Backus offers a NO-COST infant eye and vision assessment for infants 12 months of age and younger. This eye assessment is an important new component of the wellness routine parents should schedule for their infants.

The first year of life is one of the most critical stages of human development. Therefore, it is recommended that an infant receive their first comprehensive eye assessment before twelve months of age. This first assessment has the potential to make a significant impact on each child's future.

Of the three to four million babies born every year in the U.S., 1 in 20,000 has retinoblastoma, 1 in 25 will develop strabismus (crossed-eyes), and 1 in 30 will develop amblyopia (lazy-eye). Many times these conditions are not detected in time for proper management or treatment.

An InfantSEE eye assessment should become a part of the infant wellness routine.
